Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework Assessment and Roadmap
Assessment, operating model, and roadmap across the seven Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework methodologies.
Project profile
- Engagement: Azure adoption assessment and roadmap aligned with the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework
- Focus: Strategy, Plan, Ready, Adopt, Govern, Secure, and Manage
- Output: Adoption roadmap, operating model, platform decisions, adoption waves, and operational backlog
Seven methodologies, one adoption system
The Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework organizes Azure adoption into seven connected methodologies. Strategy, Plan, Ready, and Adopt form the foundational path from business outcomes to workloads running in Azure. Govern, Secure, and Manage continue throughout operation to control, protect, and improve the environment.
The engagement used these methodologies to connect business intent, workload priorities, platform readiness, and day-to-day ownership. The sequence provided structure, but decisions were revisited as adoption progressed.
A landing zone is part of Ready. It prepares the Azure environment but does not represent the complete cloud adoption journey.
Foundation path
- Strategy: Relate business drivers to measurable cloud outcomes
- Plan: Define the operating model, skills, portfolio, cost assumptions, and adoption plan
- Ready: Prepare the tenant, platform landing zone, and application landing zones
- Adopt: Sequence workloads for migration, modernization, or cloud-native development
Operational path
- Govern: Identify cloud risks, assign control ownership, and manage policy exceptions
- Secure: Apply security controls and review protection across platform and workloads
- Manage: Establish monitoring, operations, cost review, and continual improvement
Decisions recorded
Workloads were grouped by business value, dependency, risk, and readiness. Responsibilities were defined across platform, security, operations, and workload teams. Platform decisions were separated from workload architecture so that shared controls and application-specific decisions remained visible.
What to be aware of
- CAF is adaptable guidance, not a fixed implementation template.
- The seven methodologies do not need to have the same maturity at the same time.
- Ready does not replace workload architecture, migration planning, or validation.
- Govern, Secure, and Manage require owners and recurring review after deployment.
- Workload design still needs architecture guidance appropriate to that workload.
Outcome
The engagement produced a business-aligned Azure adoption roadmap with defined platform decisions, workload sequencing, operational responsibilities, and review points. It established a shared direction without treating the roadmap as permanent.
